The Interesting History Of Netball Uniforms

Netball was recognized as an official sport in the year 1901, however, before this, the game was played for years. Those interested in playing the game used to tie a paper bag around a broomstick and play. However, one of the challenges that they encountered was the fact that their style of clothing made it hard for them to play the game. This challenge then motivated them to create netball uniforms. The clothes designed made it easier for them to play the game. They not only had more freedom to move on the floor but also, had increased upper body movement, since the uniforms did not include the leg of mutton sleeves.

The first netball uniforms consisted of box tunics that ended well below the knee and starched shirts with collars. Wool stockings completed the outfit. Not only did the wool socks cover up the legs, but it kept them warm as well.

This uniform was used for 30 years before it changed. The next set of clothes included pleated skirts, blouses, and bloomers. It also included sports shoes. This type of outfit remained relevant for quite a few years. After that, a new set of uniforms were designed and it the style in that era was shorter skirts, so to the netball skirts became shorter. The bloomers were also redundant at this time and were replaced with sports shorts. Breathable cotton socks replaced wool stockings.

Ten years later, the uniforms changed yet again. Sports shorts and polos replaced pleated skirts and blouses. Players were quickly identified with the help of the bibs which were attached to the polos. During the next three years, the uniform changed drastically. The clothes continued to become tighter, until the 1990s when they became oversized.

So the netball uniform has an interesting history. It evolved from ladies playing the game in their long dresses with the leg of mutton sleeves to the game now being played with pleated mini skirts and polos. The amazing thing is that a group of women had a passion to play the game and even though they did not have the equipment or uniforms, they still used what they had to play the it. It was this passion and perseverance that lead them to create the outfits and turn netball into a game that has lasted for decades. This is proof enough that if you have a desire to do something, you can do it, no matter what challenges and obstacles you may face. All you need to do is have faith in yourself and believe.
