It was initially owned by a California-based winery

The brewery company was launched in 1997 by the Korbel Champagne Cellars, which was at the moment a California-based winery that was specializing in producing wine and a special brand of champagne known as California Champagne. In 2002, a former employee of the winery, Vinnie Cilurzo, alongside his wife Natalie bought the winery at $1 million and later revamped it into a brewery.
